Chapter 8

John was up early the next day after lying awake for another night, his body aching with need. He wasn’t sure how much longer he’d be able to see Collette before his control snapped and he carried her off to his bed to make mad passionate love to her.

What he needed was a mission to carry him off to the far side of the world to give him a chance to cool off. The time away would give her a chance to finish her schooling. By then, she might not be interested him at all.

Such was the nature of a Delta Force operator’s life.

Then why the hell wasn’t there a mission for them? When he wanted one, it wasn’t forthcoming. When they didn’t want to deploy, they could be guaranteed the nastiest, most dangerous situation would come along, and they’d be called up to handle it.

He sighed as he dressed in his uniform, made a cup of coffee and glanced out his window toward Collette’s home a few feet away from his. She could be getting a shower, standing naked beneath the spray. He could throw his coffee cup that far very easily. And yet she might as well be on the other side of town. She wasn’t interested in a relationship. Collette had been adamant about that.

Then why had she kissed him? Not once but twice.

And it hadn’t been a sweet, friendly kiss to say thank you. It had been the full-on, toe-curling, pulse-racing kind that set his blood on fire and made his cock hard enough to drive nails.

Yeah, he was in a bad way he couldn’t take care of on his own. He needed her like he needed to breathe.

All night long, he’d gone through different scenarios in his head, and he’d come to the same conclusion with all of them.

Collette wasn’t the kind of woman who could be happy with a fling. She was the all or nothing kind. If she couldn’t have it all, including a picket fence she’d half-paid for, she would abstain altogether.

Hell, she deserved more than a fling. After being ditched by her baby daddy and thrown out of her parent’s home, she didn’t need another man to muck up her life. She needed one who would stick around and make her life easier, not harder.

By the time he’d left his bed, John was clear about what he had to do.

He had to stay away from Collette and her daughter. For his peace of mind and to keep from hurting her when he had to leave. Better to break it off before it even got started.

Two kisses weren’t enough to base a long-term love affair on. It should be easy to end it now rather than drag it out and make them both miserable.
